Curls, coils, and kinks — we love to embrace them! Our love for natural hair knows no bounds and we love showcasing them in our editorials, hoping to inspire all of our fellow curly girls out there! The only trouble that ladies like us face is, not a lot of hair professionals know how to work WITH them. Most hairdressers would default to styling the hair up with flat irons, which is fine if that’s what you’re going for, but many of us would prefer to preserve our natural curls, especially for a big day like your wedding!

That’s at least what I wanted for my wedding day! And my biggest regret was not hiring someone with hair like mine to do my hair. Or I should have asked more about their experience with natural hair! My hair was pinned up and I felt beautiful but It wasn’t how I truly wanted it! So let’s talk about styling your beautiful natural hair and prepping those lovely curls, coils, and kinks!

1. Deep condition once a week or every two weeks

The thing about natural hair is it tends to be susceptible to dryness and brittleness if not cared for properly. At least for my hair, it can dry out quickly!

So prior to your big day, be sure to have the diligence to deep condition your hair once a week or biweekly to maintain that elasticity and moisture!

Bonus tip: You can also clarify your hair and remove all of the buildup you may have! I clarify my hair every other month to revive my curls! I use a clay mask combined with a few of my favorite oils to do the trick!

2. Consider the timeframe

If you’re planning to have braids or cornrows, having them done a couple of days ahead of your wedding day would be better because it can take a while!

If you’re doing a twist out or braid out you would want to take them out on the day of and moisturize your fingers with your favorite oil to unravel your hair without causing frizz! You may also be able to have this done in the salon and use a hair dryer to achieve the look you want! Decide on which route you want to take and prep accordingly!

3. Protect your hair from heat

I’m not going to stand here and tell you not to use heat to style your hair! You do you! But truth be told, heat styling can damage your hair IF not done properly. So, before you decide to pick up your heating tools, make sure your hair is clean and dry, apply some heat protection product/s first, and put your (ceramic) coated heating tools at the lowest setting!

Accessorize

The best thing about textured hair is they are already gorgeous as is! You don’t exactly need to do a lot to it to look your best. All you need is to do the necessary hair prep and accessorize with a headband, pin, or crown!

Ponytail

If you want to keep things simple but romantic for your wedding, putting your hair in a ponytail might be to your liking! Free some locks of curls up and use them to frame your face. You can also add an accessory of your choice and you’re good to go!

High Bun or Updo

If you’re leaning toward a more elegant look on your big day, a high bun or updo might be suitable for your taste! With the help of an experienced hairdresser, you can pin your hair up and leave a section to show off your curls. You can also add your preferred accessory for a romantic touch!

Short Hair/ Tapered

Some brides prefer to rock a shorter look! If you’re one of the ladies who prefer having short hair, you can do away with a pixie or a buzz! I rocked a tapered cut a while back and it was a personal favorite-it has a way of highlighting your beautiful facial features.

Bantu Knots

Bantu knots are stunning! This centuries-old hairstyle is done by dividing your hair into small sections and coiling them into knots. If you’re looking for a way to achieve a clean and stylish look for your wedding day, this is your sign to say yes to Bantu knots! It is also a perfect touch if you want to incorporate a traditional element into your look. the next day you could also do a bantu knot out!!!

Afro or Wash and go

As we have mentioned, your hair is already beautiful as is! Opting for an afro is definitely a good choice especially if you’re aiming for a more loose or carefree aesthetic. Just never ever forget to prep up to make sure your hair stays lovely and healthy all throughout the day! You can achieve this look by doing a twist out, wash n go, or combing out your curls!

We cannot wait to see you embrace your curls on your wedding day! Which hairstyle speaks to you the most? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
